On September 29, 2018, Thomas H.K. McCandless Jr., a 40-year-old male of Hawaiian descent, was fatally shot at Haleiwa Beach Park on Oahu's North Shore. The incident occurred around 12:45 a.m. when McCandless, accompanied by his two young sons, recognized 22-year-old Kaden Kanae among a group of men in an area known as 'Monuments.'
