On February 17, 2024, Cranston Duke Pia, 39, a Native Hawaiian man, was on the land he worked and loved along Oʻahu’s leeward coast when an ordinary afternoon turned into something that would ripple far beyond the ranch. The confrontation unfolded at Ohikilolo Ranch in the Makaha area, where he raised cattle. Accounts later shared publicly describe a tense and familiar problem for West Oʻahu ranchers: trespassers on agricultural land, and hunting dogs loose where they shouldn’t be.
