On June 8, 1907, Constable John H. Hollis of Jefferson County, Alabama, was fatally shot while attempting to arrest a man who was terrorizing the town of Littleton. The 25-year-old suspect was subsequently arrested, convicted of second-degree murder, and sentenced to 22 years in prison. He was paroled on December 23, 1910.
