Samuel Lewis Williams, a 39-year-old white male deputy sheriff in Birmingham, Alabama, was killed on October 11, 1927, after what began as a routine attempt to arrest a man accused of assaulting a city health inspector turned into a deadly siege. According to memorial records preserving the line-of-duty case, Williams went with other officers to the suspect’s home near downtown Birmingham, where the man refused to surrender and barricaded himself inside.
