On April 24, 1930, Deputy Sheriff Smith Owen Wester, aged 29, of the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office in Alabama, was fatally shot while serving a warrant for timber theft. As he and fellow deputies approached the suspect's residence, the individual opened fire with a rifle, striking Deputy Wester. In the ensuing exchange, another deputy returned fire, resulting in the suspect's death.
