On June 26, 1932, Deputy Sheriff J.T. Gomillion, aged 28, was fatally shot near Brooks, Alabama, in Covington County. The incident occurred when Deputy Gomillion confronted two brothers on the highway regarding their possession of whiskey. During the encounter, an exchange of gunfire ensued, resulting in the deaths of Deputy Gomillion and one of the brothers. The surviving brother sustained injuries and subsequently surrendered to authorities.
