In the autumn of 1935, the community of Northport, Alabama, was rocked by the violent death of one of its own law enforcement officers. Clyde Appling, a 28-year-old male officer with the Northport Police Department, was shot and killed on Tuesday, October 15, 1935. His death was not the result of a confrontation in the line of duty, but rather a calculated act of violence that left a lasting scar on the small Southern town.
