On April 14, 1948, Deputy Sheriff Dewey Rickles, aged 48, of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office in Alabama, responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residence in Morris. Upon entering the home, he was met with gunfire and was shot three times by a man wielding a .22 caliber rifle. Deputy Rickles succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
