On October 31, 1965, Deputy Sheriff Waylon W. Sewell, aged 55, of the Shelby County Sheriff's Office in Alabama, was fatally shot while attempting to apprehend a mentally ill individual on Double Oak Mountain Road near Birmingham. The suspect had been engaging in the robbery of motorists in the area. During the confrontation, the assailant opened fire, resulting in Deputy Sewell's death. The accompanying deputy responded by shooting and killing the offender.
