On July 30, 1971, Chief of Police D. Raleigh Clarke of the Millry Police Department in Alabama was fatally shot while investigating reports of illegal gambling and liquor sales. As he entered a local pool hall where these activities were suspected, he was ambushed and shot with a .38 caliber handgun. Chief Clarke had served with the department for two years and was 24 years old at the time of his death.
