In the quiet community of Coats Bend, just north of Gadsden, Alabama, a welfare check on a Sunday afternoon led to a grim discovery that shattered the neighborhood's sense of peace. On September 7, 2025, deputies from the Etowah County Sheriff's Office arrived at a residence in the 6000 block of Old Highway 411. Inside, they found the bodies of 71-year-old James Timothy Thornton and 57-year-old Kelley Davis Thornton. Both individuals, who resided at the home, had been fatally shot.
