The silence was finally broken in the fall of 1987 when Martha Henderson, the sister of Judy Haney and the wife of the killer, approached authorities with the truth.
The grim details of the conspiracy then came to light. Judy Haney had convinced her brother-in-law, Jerry Paul Henderson, to kill her husband, alleging that she was a victim of abuse and was desperate to make it stop. For the price of $3,000, Henderson agreed to carry out the murder. On the fatal night, Henderson lured his brother-in-law onto the front porch and shot him three times with a shotgun, the last blast fired directly into his face at point-blank range. The investigation revealed that after the murder, Henderson attempted to cover his tracks by filing a false police report, claiming his shotgun had been stolen from his truck under suspicious circumstances.
Following Martha Henderson's confession, both Jerry Paul Henderson and Judy Haney were arrested for their roles in the crime. In May 1988, Jerry Paul Henderson, a maintenance mechanic with a seventh-grade education, was convicted of capital murder and subsequently sentenced to death. Judy Haney also faced a capital murder conviction and was initially sentenced to death, though her sentence was later commuted to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
