On the evening of March 11, 1984, Kenneth Cantrell, a 29-year-old male, was at his home in Hartselle, Alabama, where he and his wife, Nell, operated a jewelry business. The night took a tragic turn when a man, later identified as Anthony Keith Johnson, called to arrange a meeting under the pretense of purchasing jewelry. Sensing something was amiss, Cantrell armed himself with a. 38 caliber pistol and instructed his wife to hide his wallet.
