On February 15, 2002, 30-year-old Terra Klugh Bates and her husband, Alan Bates, were murdered in Hoover, Alabama. The couple had traveled from their home in Frederick, Maryland, to Birmingham to participate in depositions related to a contentious custody battle between Alan and his ex-wife, Jessica McCord, over their two daughters. After arriving, they went to the McCords' residence to pick up the children for a planned visit to Alan's parents in Atlanta, Georgia.
