On February 14, 2020, 41-year-old Shemethia Tynise Coteat Stanton was fatally shot at The Park at Wellington and Wakefield apartment complex in Hoover, Alabama. At approximately 6:53 p.m., Hoover Police responded to reports of a shooting in the 800 block of Tyler Circle. Upon arrival, officers found Stanton unresponsive in the parking lot, having been shot multiple times from behind while retrieving items from the back seat of her vehicle.
