Russell Gregory, a 31-year-old Black man from Greenville, Alabama, died on May 11, 2014 after a late-night dispute spilled out of a downtown bar and turned deadly. In the early hours, an argument inside the Front Street Pub escalated into the street along West Commerce Street, drawing people outside as tensions sharpened and tempers refused to cool.
Investigators said witnesses described Marlon Herbert as being involved in the argument and getting into his car to leave, only for the confrontation to continue in the roadway in front of the pub. According to those witness accounts relayed by police, Gregory tried to pull Herbert from the vehicle—or became entangled in an altercation with him while he was still inside—when a shot rang out. Police said Gregory was struck in the head and died at the scene, while Herbert got out of the car and fled on foot before officers arrived. Greenville Police sought Herbert on a murder charge and asked the public to report any information on where he had gone.
Three days later, authorities announced an arrest. U.S. Marshals took Herbert into custody in Atlanta, and Greenville Police said he was the suspect in Gregory’s killing during the argument at Front Street Pub. The involvement of the Marshals was linked, police said, to Herbert being in violation of federal probation.
