Demetrice Hines, a 20-year-old male, tragically lost his life in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 8, 2014, following a violent altercation at an Opp, Alabama nightclub. The incident, which also left four others injured, culminated in a shooting that claimed Hines' life.
The events unfolded at The Opp Nite Club, where a dispute that began inside the establishment spilled out into the parking lot. It was there that gunfire erupted, striking multiple individuals.
Hines was critically wounded and transported to Mizell Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement officials launched a thorough investigation. Their efforts quickly led to the identification and arrest of a suspect. Catoris Gernale Fannin, a 26-year-old from Enterprise, was taken into custody and charged with one count of murder and four counts of first-degree assault.
Further investigation by the Opp Police Department revealed that Fannin had been involved in the initial altercation inside the nightclub. After being removed from the premises by security, he allegedly retrieved a firearm from his vehicle and opened fire on the crowd that had gathered in the parking lot. Following his arrest, Fannin was held in the Covington County Jail. Court records later indicated that he pleaded guilty to the charges against him.
In a separate and unrelated case, a male individual also named Demetrice Hines was involved in a fatal altercation in a different state. This Demetrice Hines faced charges of voluntary manslaughter and illegal possession of a firearm. The incident occurred when he and his brother, armed with handguns, went to confront another man. An argument ensued, escalating to the point where Hines’s brother drew his weapon. The other man, who was also armed, fired his gun, resulting in the death of Hines’s brother. In this case, Demetrice Hines pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and the firearm charge, receiving a sentence of six years in prison.
