In the late summer of 2011, a violent encounter in Opp, Alabama, claimed the life of 27-year-old Michael Jermaine Mount, a Black male. On the evening of August 10th, Mount sustained gunshot wounds to his arm and chest. Despite his injuries, he managed to drive himself to a Super C convenience store on U.S. Highway 331 in search of help. When law enforcement arrived, they found him lying on the floor of the establishment.
Emergency services transported Mount to Mizell Memorial Hospital,
but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. The subsequent investigation into the shooting pointed to an incident that had occurred the previous evening, suggesting a possible motive for the violence that ensued.
The investigation led police to two individuals: 19-year-old Carlton Hunter Brooks of Kinston and 21-year-old Marquez Deundra Hinton of Opp. Both men were arrested and faced serious charges, including capital murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. They were taken into custody as the primary suspects in Mount's death.
However, the legal proceedings took a turn in December 2011. When the case was presented to a Covington County grand jury, they declined to indict Brooks and Hinton on the capital murder charges. Testimonies presented during the proceedings suggested that the two men had acted in self-defense, leading the grand jury to decide against pursuing the charges further.
