On November 11, 1927, Policeman Edward Nix, aged 36, was fatally wounded in a gun battle in Opp, Alabama. The incident began when Nix and his fellow officer, Lee Clark, attempted to stop a car driven by an 18-year-old youth who refused to pull over. The officers fired at the vehicle, but the youth managed to escape.
