On January 20, 2015, 57-year-old African American woman Berlita Garnett was fatally shot in her home on North Herring Street in Dothan, Alabama. The incident began as a reported firearm assault but escalated into a homicide investigation after she succumbed to her injuries at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. The confrontation reportedly turned deadly when Berlita Garnett threw hot water on the suspect.
