In the late hours of August 23, 2024, the life of 35-year-old Shannette Yvonne Colbert, a Black/African American woman, was tragically cut short in her Dothan, Alabama, home. The residence, located on the 2700 block of East Cottonwood Road, became a crime scene after a heated argument escalated to fatal violence. Colbert was a mother of four who had resided in Dothan for the last decade, having moved from High Point, North Carolina.
She was employed at a local Hilton Garden Inn, where she was known for her vibrant and inspirational energy.
That Friday evening, around 11:00 pm, the Dothan Police Department received a 911 call reporting a shooting. Upon arrival, officers were met by several children inside the home. One of the older children directed them to where Colbert lay on the ground, suffering from a gunshot wound to her upper torso. Officers immediately began performing CPR and treating her wound until paramedics from the Dothan Fire Department arrived. Despite their life-saving efforts, Shannette Yvonne Colbert was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into her death quickly pointed to her ex-boyfriend, 42-year-old Phillip Lee McAdoo of High Point, North Carolina, with whom she shared a child. According to investigators, an argument between the two escalated, leading McAdoo to allegedly pull out a firearm and fire multiple shots at Colbert, one of which struck her. Witnesses at the scene confirmed that the shooting occurred after the argument turned violent.
Based on the description provided by the children present, responding officers spotted McAdoo leaving the area and conducted a traffic stop. He was taken into custody without incident. Phillip Lee McAdoo has been charged with one count of capital murder. He is currently being held without bond in the Houston County Jail. The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the events that led to the tragic death of Shannette Yvonne Colbert.
