In the early morning hours of May 4, 2008, a night that began with the promise of celebration ended in tragedy for 24-year-old Biniam Gebreyesus. An African-American man, Gebreyesus and his friends had traveled to Washington, D.C., drawn by an invitation to a party they had seen on Facebook. The group spent some time at a club in the city's bustling downtown area, an area known for its vibrant nightlife. The festive atmosphere took a dark turn when, for reasons that remain unclear, Gebreyesus was punched by an unknown individual.
Though those who knew him said he was not one to start a fight, Gebreyesus walked away to find the person who had struck him. In a sudden and violent turn of events, he was fatally stabbed in the 1000 block of Vermont Avenue, NW, at approximately 3:30 AM. A friend who was with him was also stabbed in the attack but survived his injuries. The assault appeared to be as random and senseless as the initial punch, leaving friends and investigators baffled.
In an instant, a young life was cut short, and a family was left to grapple with an inexplicable loss.
In the years that have followed, the death of Biniam Gebreyesus has remained an unsolved homicide, a painful open wound for his loved ones and the community. The Metropolitan Police Department launched an investigation, but despite their efforts and a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made.
