Mario T. Sparks, a 30-year-old Black man from the Birmingham area, died on November 30, 2015, after gunfire shattered an otherwise ordinary night on Wintergreen Avenue. The first urgent call reached police at about 9:44 p.m., sending them to the 5400 block, where they arrived to find him already dead, struck by an unknown number of gunshot wounds. The scene sat in the Brownville community, and investigators moved through it under the hard glow of emergency lights, gathering evidence and trying
to piece together the moments that led to the shooting.
In the hours that followed, officers spoke about the case as more than a single act of violence, describing it as something that demanded help from the neighborhood as well as the police. At that point, there were no suspects publicly identified, only a request for information and the steady work of detectives and evidence technicians trying to turn a handful of fragments into a clear story.
Days later, investigators announced they had made an arrest and named a suspect: Cedric Young of Birmingham. Police said Young was charged with murder for allegedly shooting Sparks outside a home on Wintergreen Avenue, and that he was being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a $250,000 bond. Investigators credited a witness for providing key information that helped them identify the suspect, turning the case from an unanswered question into a criminal prosecution.
