In the spring of 2016, a dispute over an engagement ring tragically escalated into a fatal encounter in Fairfield, Alabama. Adarius Elon Williams, a 28-year-old man, was shot and killed on April 8, 2016, in the parking lot of a Citgo gas station on Milstead Road. The day before his death, Williams had celebrated his birthday. He was a father of four.
Surveillance footage from the gas station captured the grim sequence of events.
Williams was seen approaching a white sedan where a man, later identified as 25-year-old Vincent Washington, emerged from the back seat with a towel wrapped around his head. Following a brief discussion, Vincent Washington allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Williams multiple times, even after he had fallen to the ground. Witnesses reported that Williams was shot nine times at point-blank range. After the shooting, the gunman calmly returned to the vehicle, which then drove away.
The investigation led police to charge Vincent Washington and his 31-year-old sister, Barbara Washington, with murder in connection with Williams' death. Barbara Washington was reportedly Williams' former fiancée. According to police and court records, the siblings had arranged to meet Williams at the gas station because he wanted the engagement ring back that he had given to Barbara.
Authorities believe the Washingtons had a friend drive them to the gas station under the pretense of buying her gas. The driver later told police she was unaware of their intentions and that Vincent Washington threatened to shoot her if she drove away. Vincent Washington was later found at a local hospital with gunshot wounds, which police suspect were inflicted by someone attempting to intervene and help Williams. In addition to the murder charge, Vincent Washington also faced a kidnapping charge for threatening the driver of the car. Both siblings were taken into police custody.
