In the early morning hours of July 30, 2016, a normal night out turned tragic in Dothan, Alabama. Christopher Jamel Bailey, a 26-year-old Black/African American male, was fatally shot in what police described as an 'execution'. The incident unfolded around 1:30 a.m. in the parking lot of Plum's Lounge, a nightclub located on Montgomery Highway. Bailey was ambushed as he was outside the establishment, sustaining multiple gunshot wounds to his head, back, chest, arm, and leg.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Eyewitnesses reported a chilling sequence of events, stating that after Bailey was initially shot and fell to the ground, the assailant stood over him and fired several more times. Authorities quickly identified 29-year-old Brandon Allen Ransom as the suspect. Both Bailey and Ransom had been inside the nightclub prior to the shooting, but investigators indicated the motive was not related to the club and was not a robbery. Police were firm in their belief that the attack was a targeted killing.
Shortly after the shooting, Brandon Allen Ransom was arrested and charged with murder. The legal proceedings that followed were fraught with delays and complications. An initial trial set for September 2018 was dismissed because key witnesses for the prosecution failed to cooperate. However, the pursuit of justice for Bailey did not end there. In November 2018, a Houston County grand jury re-indicted Ransom on the murder charge, leading to his re-arrest in January 2019. Despite the re-indictment, the case continued to face postponements. By October 2019, Ransom had been released on a $60,000 bond, with a trial tentatively scheduled for December of that year.
