In the summer of 2016, the life of 21-year-old Calvin Foster was tragically cut short in Birmingham, Alabama. On the evening of August 9th, Foster, a Black/African American male, was discovered outside the Oaks at Springville Apartments on Earline Circle in the northeastern part of the city. He was found lying on his stomach, bleeding from a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
Emergency services were called to the scene around 5 p.m., but Foster was pronounced dead shortly after.
Initial investigations by the Birmingham Police Department pointed to the possibility of illegal drug activity being connected to the shooting. Several individuals who were present at the scene were taken in for questioning as authorities began to piece together the events that led to Foster's demise. The tragic event marked another grim statistic in a year that saw a significant increase in homicides in Birmingham.
The investigation progressed, and on August 23, 2016, authorities announced a significant development in the case. A 35-year-old man named John Nealy was arrested and subsequently charged with capital murder in connection with Calvin Foster's death. Following his arrest, Nealy was held without bond at the Jefferson County Jail as he awaited legal proceedings. The arrest brought a measure of progress to the investigation, though the profound loss for Foster's family and community remained.
