On July 9, 2022, at approximately 1:00 a.m., Birmingham Police officers responded to reports of a person shot near the intersection of 10th Place and 22nd Avenue West, at the site of the abandoned East Thomas Apartments. Upon arrival, they discovered 25-year-old Joshua Javon Thomas lying in the roadway, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene.
