On August 24, 2017, at approximately 12:45 a.m., Birmingham Police officers responded to a report of a shooting at the intersection of Imperial Drive and 17th Street Southwest in the Mason City neighborhood. Upon arrival, they discovered 19-year-old James Jean Hendricks, a resident of Bessemer, Alabama, lying in a yard near a crashed pickup truck. Hendricks had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
