On January 19, 2018, 30-year-old William Lewis Merritt III of Bridgeport, Alabama, was fatally shot. A 2006 graduate of North Jackson High School and a 2011 graduate of Huntingdon College, Merritt was known for his athletic involvement, playing football at both institutions. After earning his bachelor's degree, he pursued a career in education and coaching, teaching at Wetumpka High School and later at North Jackson High School.
