In the spring of 2018, the life of 38-year-old Coreen Antonio Murphy, a Black male from Mobile, Alabama, was tragically cut short in an act of violence that stemmed from a familial dispute. On the evening of March 30th, what began as a disagreement between cousins escalated into a fatal encounter at a busy gas station on Zeigler Boulevard.
The incident unfolded when LeCharles Murphy, the cousin of Coreen, engaged in a heated argument with Coreen's wife inside the gas station's
convenience store. When Coreen Murphy approached the two, the confrontation spilled outside. Surveillance footage from the scene captured the moments that followed, showing LeCharles Murphy retrieving a handgun from his vehicle. He then fired a single, fatal shot that struck Coreen Murphy, who had been walking away from the confrontation.
Emergency services were called to the scene, but despite their efforts, Coreen Murphy succumbed to his injuries. The Mobile Police Department quickly identified LeCharles Murphy as the suspect, and he was subsequently arrested and charged with murder. The investigation revealed that the dispute had originated from an ongoing family disagreement, with the confrontation at the gas station being the tragic culmination of this animosity.
LeCharles Murphy's case went to trial, where a jury was presented with the evidence, including the crucial surveillance footage that captured the shooting. After deliberations, the jury found LeCharles Murphy guilty of the murder of his cousin. Following the conviction, he was sentenced to serve 30 years in prison for the crime.
