Jermaine LaJuane Ashley, 46, a Black male, was killed late on the night of August 31, 2018, in Montgomery, Alabama. Just before midnight, police described finding him after a shooting in an area near where West Fairview Avenue meets Mobile Highway, a stretch of the city that was suddenly sealed off by flashing lights and the urgency of a homicide call.
Authorities said officers and fire medics were dispatched to the 2400 block of Hickman Street at about 11:30 p.m.
after a report that someone had been shot. At the scene, they located Ashley suffering from a gunshot wound and pronounced him dead there, turning what began as a frantic emergency response into a death investigation under streetlights.
At first, police reported no arrests, and the case hung in that early, tense limbo where neighbors trade fragments of what they heard while detectives work the first hours of a timeline. Within days, however, the Montgomery Police Department announced an arrest: Kendrick Holley of Montgomery was taken into custody in connection with the killing.
Investigators said their initial findings pointed to a conflict between people who already knew each other. Police described Ashley and Holley as known associates and said an altercation escalated into the shooting. Holley was charged with murder and booked into the Montgomery County Detention Facility with bond set at $150,000, as officials emphasized that the investigation was still continuing and that no further details were available at that time.
