In Washington, D.C., the life of 38-year-old Michael McKoy was tragically cut short in May of 2010. On a Thursday afternoon, at approximately 2:31 pm, McKoy was stabbed and killed in the 1600 block of V Street, SE. The Metropolitan Police Department promptly began an investigation into the homicide, seeking assistance from the public to gather information about the incident.
For years, the case remained a painful open wound for McKoy's family. A breakthrough finally came, leading to the arrest of a suspect. Jackie Berry, who was described as a friend of McKoy's and had been sleeping on his couch for an extended period, was charged in connection with the stabbing.
Initially facing a charge of second-degree murder while armed, along with weapons charges, Berry eventually pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter while armed.
During the sentencing hearing in September 2019, Michael McKoy's mother delivered a powerful and emotional victim impact statement. She spoke of her shattered life and urged the judge to impose a harsher sentence than the 10 years that had been recommended as part of the plea agreement. Despite her plea, the judge sentenced Jackie Berry to a decade in prison. Berry expressed remorse for his actions, stating, 'I regret everything.'
