Toderick Smith, a 35-year-old Black man from the Hope Hull area of Montgomery, Alabama, was killed in the first minutes of Tuesday, July 30, 2019, in a burst of gunfire that turned an ordinary summer night into a crime scene. Just after midnight, Montgomery police were dispatched to the 5700 block of East Shirley Lane after a report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Smith suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound.
The damage was already done; he was pronounced dead at the scene as detectives began the grim work of marking off the area and trying to piece together what had happened.
In the early hours, the neighborhood offered more questions than answers. Police described the case as a homicide investigation and said the shooting remained under active investigation, but they did not announce a suspect or a motive. They also reported that no arrests had been made.
