On a Saturday morning in Montgomery, Alabama, a shooting claimed the life of Samuel Brown, a 44-year-old Black man. The incident also left a second man critically wounded. On August 3, 2024, around 11:22 a.m., police responded to a local hospital after receiving a report about gunshot victims. There, they found Mr. Brown, who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead.
The other victim, an unidentified adult male, was suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound.
Investigators determined that the shooting had occurred in the 2400 block of Locust Street. According to court documents that later became public, the two men were inside a vehicle when they were shot. The Montgomery Police Department opened both a homicide and an attempted murder investigation to piece together the events that led to the violence.
The investigation quickly led to a suspect. On Tuesday, August 6, 2024, officers with the police department's Special Operations unit arrested 21-year-old Nathaniel Irving of Montgomery in connection with the shooting.
Irving was charged with capital murder for the death of Samuel Brown and attempted murder for the shooting of the second man. A police spokeswoman explained that the capital murder charge was brought because Irving had allegedly fired into an occupied vehicle. He was taken to the Montgomery County Detention Facility, where he was held without bond. As of August 2024, the case was proceeding through the court system.
