In the spring of 2011, a burst of violence in the Washington Highlands neighborhood of Washington, D.C., claimed the life of 22-year-old Reginald L. Williams. A Black male, Williams was fatally shot on the evening of Wednesday, April 6, 2011, in what authorities identified as a double homicide. The incident also resulted in the death of 20-year-old Joshua Ruffin.
The shooting occurred on Yuma Street SE, adding to a string of violent acts that unsettled the city that week. Friends and family of Williams were left to mourn the sudden and tragic loss of the young man. In the days that followed, candlelight vigils were held as the community came together to remember both Williams and Ruffin. A funeral service for Reginald L. Williams was held the following week, allowing loved ones to pay their final respects.
