Olmero Lopez-Santos, a 42-year-old Hispanic male, was found unresponsive with gunshot wounds in a vehicle in the parking lot of a shopping center at 1819 S. Pleasant Valley Road in Southeast Austin on November 29, 2022. The Austin Police Department responded to a shots fired call at approximately 10:17 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered Lopez-Santos seated in the vehicle, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident was classified as Austin's 64th homicide of 2022.
The investigation into the death of Olmero Lopez-Santos revealed that he was shot while seated in his vehicle. The APD conducted an on-scene investigation and determined that the shooting was a homicide. Despite extensive efforts, the police initially had no information on a suspect and appealed to the public for any leads. They encouraged anyone with information to contact the APD or submit tips anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program, offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.
In December 2022, the APD made a significant breakthrough in the case. Shane Alexander Taylor, a 37-year-old male, was arrested in connection with a burglary. During the arrest, police found two firearms and ammunition on Taylor. The APD's Burglary Unit contacted the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for testing, and the confiscated firearms were linked to casings collected at the murder crime scene of Olmero Lopez-Santos. As a result, Taylor faced state charges of murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and burglary of a building.
The investigation into the murder of Olmero Lopez-Santos highlighted the effectiveness of the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network program, which was implemented in Travis County to analyze ballistic evidence and aid in the investigation and prosecution of firearm-related cases. The collaboration between the APD, ATF, and the Travis County District Attorney's Office played a crucial role in solving the case and bringing the suspect to justice.
