On the night of March 27, 2020, in Huntsville, Alabama, a dispute between rival motorcycle clubs escalated into a burst of violence that claimed the life of 45-year-old Kelcey Wayne Delonzoe Smith. The fatal confrontation also resulted in the death of another man, 53-year-old Bernard E. Griffin. The shootings took place outside a motorcycle club on Mastin Lake Road, shattering the night with the sound of gunfire and leaving a scene of chaos for authorities to unravel.
The ensuing
investigation by the Huntsville Police Department pointed to a culmination of ongoing tensions between the two motorcycle groups. Within weeks, authorities identified and apprehended two suspects in connection with the double homicide. The first, 31-year-old Albert Vinson of Madison, Alabama, was taken into custody on April 16, 2020. He faced a string of serious charges, including two counts of murder, one count of discharging a firearm into an occupied building, and one count of first-degree assault.
The second suspect, 37-year-old Tyrone Johnson, was arrested in Nashville, Tennessee, by a U.S. Marshal's task force. A search of Johnson's residence at the time of his arrest uncovered a significant arsenal of weapons, including 17 guns, two sets of body armor, and thousands of rounds of ammunition, along with gang paraphernalia. Johnson was subsequently charged with two counts of murder, discharging a firearm into an occupied building, and first-degree assault, and was held on a $500,000 bond before his extradition to Alabama. Both he and Vinson faced the possibility of life in prison if convicted of the murders.
