police just after 4 a.m., James Sheppard claimed to have 'blacked out.' He told the dispatcher that he awoke to a horrifying scene: he was holding both a knife and a handgun, and his wife, Stephanie, was on their bed, bleeding profusely from a severe neck injury. He stated that he must have been the one to have shot or cut her. This call prompted a swift response from Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's deputies and Brookwood police officers, who rushed to the couple's residence.
Upon their arrival, law enforcement officers discovered Stephanie Megan Sheppard near the front door of the home.
