Mondrelle Kellogg, a 25-year-old Black man from Birmingham, was killed on October 27, 2020, in the 100 block of Center Street South in the city’s North Titusville area. Late that afternoon, police were sent to the scene on a report of a person shot, and when officers arrived they found him on the ground in front of his car with a gunshot wound. Nearby, a woman had also been shot.
Kellogg was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman survived and was taken to UAB Hospital for treatment of injuries described as non-life-threatening.
What investigators later pieced together gave the shooting the feel of a sudden, violent break in an ordinary moment. Police said Kellogg had driven to the location, gotten out of his car, and exchanged words with an unknown person. According to the account released by Birmingham authorities, as he turned and walked back toward his vehicle, he was shot by another unknown suspect. The gunfire struck the nearby woman as well, widening the damage in an instant before the shooter fled on foot, leaving the street behind with one man dead, one woman wounded, and a case that would remain unresolved for years.

Birmingham police were still publicly asking for help on the case in November 2023, and reporting at that time said there were no suspects in custody.
