In the quiet moments of a Wednesday evening in Bessemer, Alabama, the life of 27-year-old Shaquille O'Neil Steel was tragically cut short. On March 3, 2021, Steel was discovered inside a vehicle, the victim of a fatal shooting. The car was parked near an apartment complex in the 300 block of 13th Street North, a detail that would become central to the unfolding investigation.
Responding to a call about a person down, Bessemer police officers arrived on the scene to find Steel
unresponsive. He had sustained a gunshot wound, and despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead.
