In the spring of 2021, a weekend in Mobile, Alabama, was marred by violence that cut short the life of Tyriek Esters, a 19-year-old African American male. On the morning of Sunday, April 11th, at approximately 11:30 a.m., police officers were dispatched to the 2800 block of Old Shell Road following a report of a person shot. Upon their arrival, they discovered Tyriek suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital for emergency medical care, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he later died.
Tyriek was a senior at a Mobile County school on the cusp of graduation with the class of 2021. Remembered for his fun-loving personality and a smile that could light up a room, his death sent ripples of grief through his community. Friends and family mourned the loss of a young man known for his infectious laughter, holding candlelight vigils and sharing tributes to his memory. His passing was one of two fatalities resulting from four separate shootings that weekend in Mobile.
The Mobile Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the shooting. Their efforts quickly led to a suspect, as authorities determined the incident was not a random act of violence; Tyriek and the person who shot him were known to each other. Three days after the fatal shooting, on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, homicide detectives made an arrest. Roderick Sykes, an 18-year-old, was taken into custody at a location on Azalea Road. He was subsequently charged with murder in connection with Tyriek Esters' death.
