On a tragic day in Eufaula, Alabama, the community was shaken by the discovery of a partially submerged car in Lake Eufaula. A jogger passing by Creek Town Park on April 26, 2021, noticed the vehicle in the water and immediately alerted the authorities. What lay inside was a scene of profound loss that would leave a lasting scar on the town.
Inside the blue Toyota sedan, investigators found the bodies of 36-year-old Remona Hudson and her two young sons, 12-year-old Kyle Hudson and
13-year-old Kaleb Hudson. Kyle was a Black/African American male. The initial investigation soon revealed a grim reality; the family had not been victims of a tragic accident but of a violent crime. It was determined that all three had been shot with a handgun inside the vehicle before it entered the lake.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's State Bureau of Investigation quickly identified a suspect in the triple homicide. Demetrius Devonte McGhee, a 26-year-old from Clayton, Alabama, was taken into custody after being released from a hospital. He was subsequently charged with four counts of capital murder in connection with the deaths of Remona, Kyle, and Kaleb Hudson.
