In the early evening of September 6, 2021, a burst of violence shattered the quiet of the Toulminville neighborhood in Mobile, Alabama, leaving a young life extinguished. Chavan Jometrius Scruggs, a 16-year-old male, was found lying in the road on the 1800 block of Allison Street. He had been shot and was pronounced deceased at the scene. His death, a result of a single gunshot to the back, would set in motion a nearly three-year journey for justice for his grieving family.
