In the early morning of October 28, 2021, the life of 31-year-old LaToya Shardae Merritt was tragically cut short in her Talladega, Alabama, home. A mother of three, Merritt was the victim of a violent act of domestic violence.
The man identified as the suspect was Kavaris Oden. According to reports, Oden forced his way into Merritt's residence on Howard Street and fatally shot her. It was later revealed that Merritt had an active restraining order against him at the time of her death. The incident was ultimately ruled a murder-suicide by the Talladega Police Department, as Oden took his own life after killing Merritt.
LaToya was a graduate of Talladega High School and was pursuing an associate's degree in early childhood education at Strayer University. She was also employed as a shipping clerk at an Amazon facility in Bessemer. Described as a loving and caring mother, she enjoyed singing, dancing, and spending time with her family and friends. Her three daughters were reportedly in the home at the time of the incident but were physically unharmed. In the wake of her death, a fundraiser was established to help support her children.
