In the quiet town of Talladega, Alabama, a tragic story unfolded in the winter of 1986, forever marking the community. Linda Jarman, a 33-year-old white female, was a student at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, where she was working towards building a future for herself. Her life, however, was brutally cut short in her own apartment at the Sunrise Apartment Complex.
In early February of 1986, concern grew when Linda and another student, Sherri Weathers, hadn't been seen for
days. On February 24th, a welfare check led to a horrifying discovery. Inside their respective apartments, law enforcement found the bodies of Linda Jarman, Sherri Weathers, and Sherri's two young sons, Chad and Joseph, who were only five and four years old. All four had been strangled to death. The investigation would soon reveal that Linda was killed on February 19, 1986, as part of a chilling killing spree. The peaceful lives of these individuals had been violently extinguished, leaving a community in shock and fear.
The investigation into the gruesome murders quickly focused on a man who had been volunteering at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind under the alias Daniel Spence. This seemingly helpful volunteer was in reality Daniel Lee Siebert, a man with a dark and violent past. Siebert had managed to embed himself in the community, gaining the trust of those around him, including his victims. After the murders, he vanished, taking Linda Jarman's car and leaving a trail of questions and grief in his wake. His spree was not over, as he would go on to commit other murders in different states.
A widespread manhunt for Daniel Lee Siebert ensued. Law enforcement officials tirelessly followed leads across multiple states. A crucial break in the case came from a phone call Siebert made to a friend, which investigators were able to trace. This led to his eventual capture near Nashville, Tennessee. Following his arrest, the full scope of his horrific crimes began to surface, revealing him to be a serial killer responsible for numerous deaths. Siebert was charged with the murders of Linda Jarman, Sherri Weathers, and her two children, as well as another woman named Linda Odum. He was convicted of these heinous crimes and sentenced to death. Daniel Lee Siebert would ultimately spend the rest of his life on death row, dying of pancreatic cancer in prison before his execution could be carried out.
