Sherri Ann Smith Weathers, a 24-year-old white female, was a student at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind in Talladega, Alabama. She was hearing-impaired and lived in the Porter Building apartments near the campus. In early 1986, she began a relationship with a man who introduced himself as Danial Spence, later identified as Danial Lee Siebert. Siebert had arrived in Talladega in January 1986 and was working with the Institute's theater program as a set designer.
