On a tragic Friday night in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 22-year-old Anthony 'Boosie' Murry was cut short in a hail of gunfire. On November 12, 2021, Murry, along with 24-year-old Ronald Deshawn 'Boonie' Smith Jr., was fatally shot in what authorities have described as a planned and targeted attack. The shooting occurred in the 1100 block of 33rd Street Southwest, where the two men were discovered deceased in the backseat of a car.
Two other individuals were also wounded in the quadruple shooting, which saw as many as 30 rounds fired at the vehicle.
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to a then 19-year-old local rapper. On April 27, 2023, Koreon Desan Johnson, who performs under the name Rayworld Dinero, was arrested and charged with capital murder for the deaths of Murry and Smith. At the time of the shooting, Johnson was reportedly out on bail for a previous murder charge from September 2021. In connection with the November incident, Johnson faces two counts of capital murder and two counts of attempted murder.
While a specific motive for the shooting has not been officially released, the violence has been linked to the city's drill rap culture, which sometimes sees street rivalries escalate into real-world violence. Johnson, who was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Task Force, is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond as he awaits trial. His case is listed as 'Pretrial Inmate,' and he continues to face legal proceedings for the multiple violent crimes he is accused of committing.
