In the late spring of 2024, the life of 19-year-old JaQuavius James Weston was tragically cut short in Birmingham, Alabama. Known affectionately as 'Quay,' Weston was born on August 4, 2005. A student of Fairfield High Preparatory School, he was a beloved son, brother, and grandson.
On May 15, 2024, a grim discovery was made in the Ensley Highlands neighborhood of west Birmingham. JaQuavius Weston was found deceased in a wooded area, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
His death was the result of gun violence, a fact that would soon launch a homicide investigation.
The community mourned the loss of the young man, with funeral services held on May 25, 2024, at Westside Funeral Chapel Fairfield, followed by his interment at Patterson Forest Grove Memorial Gardens. As his family grieved, the Birmingham Police Department continued their search for answers and the individual responsible for his death.
Months later, in October 2024, a significant development brought a measure of hope for justice to JaQuavius's loved ones. The Birmingham police announced the arrest of a suspect, Cameron Scales. Scales was taken into custody and charged in connection with the fatal shooting of Weston. He is currently being held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail as he awaits legal proceedings.
