In the quiet city of Daphne, Alabama, a horrific tragedy shattered the peace on a February evening in 2023, resulting in the death of 80-year-old Leonard Smith and three other individuals. The brutal events unfolded at a home on Melanie Loop, where a dispute, reportedly over something as trivial as doing the dishes, escalated into an act of unimaginable violence.
Earlier on that fateful day, February 22nd, 21-year-old Jared Tarant Smith-Bracy had a minor brush with the law, having been
arrested for criminal mischief. After bonding out of jail, he was driven back to the family home. What happened next was a rapid and violent outburst. Smith-Bracy is said to have taken a gun from the person who gave him a ride and forced his way into the house. A witness, hearing gunshots, quickly alerted the police.
Investigators believe the violence began in the backyard, where three people were shot. The assailant then reportedly went inside the house and bludgeoned his grandfather, Leonard Smith, to death. Not finished with his rampage, he returned to the backyard and further bludgeoned the three victims he had already shot. When police arrived, they discovered a gruesome scene. Leonard Smith was found deceased at the foot of his bed inside the home. The other victims, identified as Smith-Bracy's 72-year-old grandmother Barbara Smith, his 27-year-old brother Jeremy Smith, and a 70-year-old family friend Sheila Glover, were found in the backyard. Authorities located and arrested Smith-Bracy, who was found hiding in the woods behind the residence.
Following his arrest, Jared Tarant Smith-Bracy confessed to the killings, making the chilling statement, 'I had to get them before they got me.' He was subsequently charged with four counts of capital murder. In the ensuing legal proceedings, Smith-Bracy's defense attorneys have raised questions about his mental state, leading to multiple mental health evaluations to determine his competency to stand trial. Despite these evaluations, a grand jury indicted him on the capital murder charges in May 2024. He remains held without bond in the Baldwin County Jail, with a potential trial date set for May 2025.
