In the quiet community of Daphne, Alabama, a horrific chain of events unfolded on a February evening, leaving a family and a community shattered. Jeremy Smith, a 27-year-old male, was tragically killed on February 22, 2023, in a violent outburst that also claimed the lives of three others. The day took a dark turn following a minor incident that escalated into an unimaginable tragedy.
Earlier that day, Jeremy's younger brother, Jared Smith-Bracy, then 21, was arrested for criminal
mischief after damaging a door at the family home. After being released on bond, he was given a ride back to the residence. Upon arrival, in a sudden and violent turn, Smith-Bracy is said to have grabbed a gun from the vehicle and forced his way inside the house. What followed was a brutal attack that left four people dead.
Police were summoned to the home on Melanie Loop in the Lake Forest subdivision around 6 p.m. after receiving multiple calls about gunfire. There, they discovered a gruesome scene. In the backyard, they found the bodies of Jeremy Smith, his 72-year-old grandmother Barbara Smith, and a 71-year-old family friend, Sheila Glover. All three had been shot. Inside the home, in his bedroom, lay the body of his 80-year-old grandfather, Leonard Smith, who had been bludgeoned to death with a pickax. Investigators believe Smith-Bracy shot the three victims in the yard first, then went inside to kill his grandfather, before returning outside to further assault the initial victims with the pickax.
A SWAT team was called to the scene, and after a search, Jared Smith-Bracy was found hiding in the woods behind the house and was taken into custody. Police say he later confessed to the murders. He has since been charged with four counts of capital murder. During his initial court appearance, he pleaded not guilty by reason of mental defect or disease. In May 2024, a grand jury indicted Smith-Bracy on the four capital murder charges, and he faces the possibility of the death penalty if convicted. He is being held without bond at the Baldwin County Jail. Authorities have described him as cooperative and polite during interviews, yet showing no remorse for the killings, which they believe were premeditated.
